WEST AFRICAN DRUMMING
1. You must drum in class. Be warned that this class will be very loud and can be physically strenuous. Not participating IS NOT an acceptable option. Refusal to play when asked or told by the teacher can result in an absence and/or OVRR detention.
2. You must come to class, on time, everyday. Absences and tardies can result in OVRR detention.
Extended “breaks” from class (anything over 5min) are not acceptable and are grounds for an absence and/or OVRR detention.
3. EVERYONE must help to carry, set up and take down drums. You should NEVER have to be reminded or asked to do this.
4. In order to meet expectation and/or pass this class you must be able to meet all the other expectations as outlined in this document. You must also be able play all the DJEMBE parts that are taught in class. Yes, you WILL be tested on what we learn.
5. Regardless of your experience or lack of experience, your classmates and teacher must be treated with respect. In fact, more experienced drummers and High Schoolers will be expected to set the example for behavior, attitude and work effort AT ALL TIMES. Failure to do so is unacceptable.
6. We will play some rhythms that are new to everyone and many that the class has played in past Quarters. Understand that your experience or lack of experience with a particular rhythm will not change the what is expected of you in class.
